About Shodoshima

This is what Inoue Seikoen looks like.

Inoue Seikoen is a farm located on the natural island of Shodoshima.
“We become farmers to give our all to the gifts of nature and the land with a grateful heart.”
With this hope in mind, we named the farm Inoue Seikoen. Here, we grow around 3,200 olive trees and 14 varieties of citrus fruits with love and care.

We are proud of the Seto Inland Sea - its changing seasons, its time-honored culture, and the friendliness of its people.
Our Shodoshima is a small island located in the Seto Inland Sea, with a circumference of about 144 kilometers and a population of only about 30,000.
The island has the beauty of mountains and sea, as well as a long-standing industry and culture. More importantly, this place is full of human touch.
Even on an island of this size, it’s amazing that we have a 400-year-long history of making soy sauce and noodles.
Many traditions that tell of the island's history and culture are still preserved, such as rural kabuki and festivals held across the island.
This rich history and culture includes, of course, the citrus industry, and we grow olives here.

The History of Shodoshima and Olives

1908 (Meiji 41) - In order to produce Japan's first domestic olive oil, experimental cultivation designated by the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry was carried out in the three prefectures of Kagawa, Mie, and Kagoshima. As a result, only the olive trees in Kagawa Prefecture (Shodoshima) successfully borne fruit.

During the Taisho era, equipment was gradually improved, and extensive research was conducted on oil extraction and olive fruit, which enabled Shodoshima to improve its harvest volume and processing technology. Private enterprises also began to produce olive pickles and cosmetic hair oils. Many artists also came to the island to create works with olives as the theme, making Shodoshima a veritable olive island.

Olives - a symbol of peace and prosperity

Decades have passed, and the olive trees are still bearing fruit.
The olive – used on the United Nations flag – is beloved as a symbol of peace and prosperity.
We value the natural bounty of the island, the olive trees and countless other species of trees on our farm, and are committed to bringing you the highest quality, healthiest products. At the same time, we also hope to share the island's rich natural resources with our customers.
Shodoshima, with its slow pace and rich nature, is a place worth visiting. If you ever get the chance to visit the island, please come and visit our farm. We sincerely welcome you!
